Sebastian Wintermute is a New York City based fine art photographer whose work interweaves architectural elements and illusionary components creating images that transport the viewers into another universe, another world where the ordinary doesn’t exist, a place where dreams and legends are mirrored as reality.
Growing up, Sebastian was fortunate to have opportunities to backpack and hitchhike across Europe and Asia. While studying art and history, he visited the greate museums and world famous art collections, got his palms callused and back sunburned working on archaeological digs, saw Aurora Borealis over the Lapland tundra, sunrises over the Mongolian grass plains and sunsets over the Great Pyramids, went ship wreck diving in Mediterranean, Baltic and along the Atlantic Coast, and rode vintage motorcycles from border to border of the USA. During his world travels and his life in New York City, Sebastian meet many talented painters, photographers, musicians, and performers, who taught him to see the world through the prism of unique personal experience and imagination. Sebastian's artistic vision and approach further evolved through studying the lives and works of the remarkable abstract and surrealist artists of the 20th century, as well as ancient mythology, modern poetry, and storytelling. In this blend of genres and techniques, Sebastian discovered a unique equilibrium that results in images composed of intricate details, symmetries, and contrasts of vivid colors and serenity of black and white. Sebastian's artistic process is not strictly guided; it unfolds according to his visions, but more importantly, it arises from seemingly serendipitous encounters. The retouching employed in creating the art pieces goes beyond mere non-transformation. Whether traditional darkroom are used or the latest digital tools applied to photograph, Sebastian consistently strives to create a dreamlike reality from simple imagery. An expert in the history of photographic techniques and a skilled photo editor, Sebastian is frequently called upon to lend his expertise to projects that involve rare, antique, and one-of-a-kind photographs and images.
